WELCOME TO GIARDINI BELLISSIMI

I am Daniele Altieri, an Italian former scientist with a background in biology who has evolved into a passionate garden designer. Just as your home's design and interiors reflect your aesthetic sensibility and functional requirements, so should your garden design align seamlessly with your vision and preferences. Allow me to share the guiding principles and inspirations that define my style, enabling you to make an informed decision about our potential collaboration. Along with a comprehensive view of my portfolio, you will be able to assess whether our creative visions align harmoniously.

THE NAME AND ITS SUBLIMINAL CONTENT

The choice of “GIARDINI BELLISSIMI”, the plural form of "Giardino Bellissimo" (Very Beautiful Garden), reflects my Italian heritage which plays an important role in my design approach and style. While it might come across as a bit grandiose, this name also reflects my passionate commitment to delivering excellence to my clients. Essentially, the brand's name resonates with our mission statement. Furthermore, the name playfully incorporates an element of repetition, with the letter "i" appearing six times, bestowing both unity and rhythm upon our brand identity. This repetition is no coincidence: it is a subtle and deliberate nod to the fundamental principles of good garden design. Much like repetition in music, poetry, art, graphic design and architecture, it serves as a key "tool" in our creative arsenal. The vertical shape of the letter "i" also echoes the use of vertical plants and structures, which are often employed as repeated elements to instil rhythm and cohesion throughout a garden, further reinforcing our commitment to the artistry of garden design.

BEAUTIFUL GARDENS THROUGH CLEAR COMMUNICATION

I understand that the process of garden design can sometimes be confusing, leaving clients unsure about what to expect. That's why I prioritise clear communication as one of the fundamental pillars of my services. I am also a speaker and teacher on subjects of garden design, a garden tour leader and I have been a garden writer for Italian magazines. I am therefore aware of the need for clarity when explaining the way I work. I believe that by effectively listening to your needs and desires, we can collaboratively define the problem to solve and embark on a garden design journey that exceeds your expectations. At its core, garden design is a creative, problem-solving exercise. It involves addressing the challenges and limitations of a space, while recognizing its unique potential to create a harmonious and inspiring environment. You will find a detailed explanation of the way I work in the SERVICES section.

A SYNTHESIS OF ITALIAN STYLE, ENGLISH TRADITION AND SCIENCE

My Italian background, with its rich heritage of formal gardens, serves as a strong foundation for my design philosophy. The elegant geometry and meticulous attention to detail that characterise Italian gardens have influenced my approach, adding a touch of timeless beauty and sophistication to each project. It is also undeniable that my previous life as a scientist has instilled in me a rational and analytical approach to problem-solving.

I believe in thoroughly examining every aspect of your garden while conducting the initial site analysis. This scientific mindset allows me to craft solutions that seamlessly blend creativity and practicality, ensuring your garden thrives in its unique ecosystem.

Additionally, my love and long professional experience with plants, the quintessence of the great English garden tradition, is the ideal complement to my design style. Combining the elegant simplicity of Italian garden design with a deep understanding of plants, their characteristics, and their mutual interaction within the garden, I create captivating outdoor spaces that embody both beauty and functionality. Photo: Giardino Giusti, Verona, Italy.

A FAMILY'S PASSION FOR ART AND PLANTS

I consider myself exceptionally fortunate to have been raised under the influence of two truly remarkable individuals, my mother and my father. My mother Livia (here in the photo above), still nurturing her flowers at the age of 92, instilled in me a deep appreciation for the wonders of plant life. Her dedication to nurturing and maintaining with sheer joy her garden has been a constant source of inspiration. My father Sergio (in the photo below), an artist who still remains very active professionally at 93, has taught me to see the world through a lens of colour and composition. His artistic sensibilities have greatly influenced my ability to envision and create captivating garden spaces.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERTISE

During this long career I worked mainly in the UK and also in Northern Italy, in Sicily and in Japan. I hold a Master of Science (M.Sc.) degree in Biological Sciences from the University of Trieste, Italy, my home country. This academic background allows me to approach garden design with a deep understanding of the ecological principles and plant sciences that underpin successful garden ecosystems. I have further honed my skills through professional training here in the UK. I have earned the respected Royal Horticultural Society Level 3 Certificate, expanding my expertise in plants and horticulture. Then, I studied garden design with the late John Brookes, the doyen of British Landscape Design and a highly regarded writer and lecturer in the field. (I am the tallest in the photo, in 1998, looking at John). John Brookes' biography.

Studying under John Brookes' guidance has not only deepened my comprehension of garden design but has also equipped me with a wealth of invaluable professional insights and knowledge. This educational journey paved the way for my career as a Garden Designer, where I sought to bridge the gap between theory and practicality.

I embarked on this path by immersing myself in the real world of plants and gardens. After working at one of Sir Geoffrey Jellicoe’s masterpieces, Sutton Place in Surrey, I further honed my skills at two enchanting National Trust gardens: The Courts in Wiltshire, where I served as Assistant Head Gardener, and Smallhythe Place, where I took on the role of Head Gardener. Working with these historic and diverse gardens not only enriched my theoretical knowledge but also provided me with a pragmatic perspective on garden and planting design. As a Head Gardener for the National Trust, I delved into the practical aspects of garden management and maintenance.

This experience has been invaluable in understanding the intricacies of plant selection, considering environmental factors, and designing with long-term sustainability in mind. I've come to appreciate the importance of choosing robust and suitable plant varieties, ensuring that your garden not only impresses at first glance but also flourishes and evolves gracefully with the passage of time.
